Subaru Legacy Singapore Trackday on 27th Jul 2007

It had been quite a long while since my last upate on this slot. Well, it was mainly due to my laziness and also more importantly nothing much to update as I was struggling thinking on how to break below the 2:50 minutes lap time. The experience of the last track reminded me that I'm not getting enough time to stay on the track due to the boiling oil and also to find the sweet spot of the Ohlin DFV setup. The first problem was easy to solve. I went to fixed a custom oil cooler and went for the Legacy Private Trackday to try it out.

This particular track day was organised by Subaru Legacy Singapore and I just kinda "tagged" along to have some fun. However, it turned out to be a wet track day and I didn't track much as I can't do my best and don't really like water from seeping into the cabin. So, as usual, I waited for the weather to turn and it really happened on the last hour of the track session.

I headed out to make a couple of easy laps, bearing in mind that the track was still wet. The car was turning much better compared to the last track day. You can tell the cornering capability of the car during the last SGT trackday from Freddy's remark : "Wow, your car cannot turn !". The difference this time is that I soften the font damping and at the same time running -2 degrees camber on the front (Thanks to Freddy for pointed that out to me). After a few laps, I went back to pit with good confidence and waited for the track to dry up.

While waiting at the pit, I suddenly had a strange idea to harden the damping due to the good feedback I had in the earlier laps. It was a mistake because I did not consider the fact that I was not pushing hard enough on the wet. So, after hardening the dampers, the car was not turning as well as I thought it would be. The worst part is that I already don't have enough time to change back the setting as it only left 30 minutes of track time. However, I tried my best to lap and ended up with a 2:51:14 best lap time, which was just a little better than the last clocked 2:52:11 on the previous SGT trackday.

"When it ain't broke, don't fix it!" This is what I should have followed. I set the dampers back to my previous setting before heading back to Singapore from Sepang. Beside that, the weather didn't provide the chance for my to test out the effectiveness of the oil cooler as it was quite cool even for the last 30 minutes of the dry track. But there is always another time for it. To sum it up, the fun for the last 30 minutes of track time already made the track fee worth it. Many thanks to "Black Moo" for organising this fun track day.

This video was taken during the last 3 laps that I had before the track ended. The track's condition was dry but some parts of the track was quite bumpy due to the new re-layering job prior to this track day. In my opinion, the new layer didn't feel as good as the old one.

Some fun laps running with the Legacies. It was their private track day anyway!
